Hard Tonneau

datePosted on 00:00, June 29th, 2008 by Brian Fuller

If you are looking to add a touch of class to your truck, you may want to add a hard tonneau. These truck bed covers are usually made of fibreglass and are painted to match the color of your pickup truck. The hard truck cover is hinged at the cab end and lift up from the back of the truck.

Although these covers are a little heavy, opening and closing them is easy with the help of shocks that make the job very easy.

The exception to the back end opening is a lid that opens on either side of the truck bed in a butterfly style and which is called the Butterfly Tonneau by Gaylord’s. This type would be great for anyone using their cargo area often and need easy access to all areas of the cargo bed.

The smooth epoxy finish of the fibreglass tonneau makes for a smooth paint job which will be as shiny as the rest of your truck. When your truck is all washed and waxed including the cover it will look very classy.

The hard tonneau has been around for a little while now and have been known to help save fuel consumption. With the price of fuel today, and the way truck’s are known to gobble it up, we can use all the help we can get.

Without a truck bed cover, wind goes over the cab and drops down quickly and bangs into your tailgate holding the truck back and making the engine work harder. The cover gives the truck a more aerodynamic shape allowing the wind to pass over the truck with less resistance. The more you drive and the higher speeds you use will determine the amount of savings a tonneau will bring you.

The hard tonneau comes with locking capabilities which also adds a great deal of security for your cargo. Not only will the lid protect your cargo from thieves, it will keep the weather off your cargo as well. You will not have to cramp your cab area with items during bad whether situations.

The fibreglass lids are a little expensive and there is an alternative to the fibreglass lid if you want a hard tonneau. The Undercover tonneau is a very tough truck bed cover with a lot of advantages over the fibreglass cover, including the price.

Bakflip Tonneau Cover Review

datePosted on 00:49, June 27th, 2008 by Brian Fuller

At first glance you might think the spelling is wrong for this tonneau cover as it is called the Bakflip tonneau cover. This is the way it was intended to be spelled. It is made by BAK Industries hence the spelling. Bak is also the creator of the RollBak tonneau cover . Bak Industries say “Our belief is that just because a truck is used for work, doesn’t mean it should look like a work-truck. It is possible to elegantly craft rugged and strong products and still maintain a clean look of sophistication and style.” Their company is located in North Hollywood California.

The Bakflip tonneau cover is a real nice piece of work. This hard truck bed cover is made of an automotive grade exterior UV Resistant plastic which is also scratch resistant. The cores of the panels are filled with a very sturdy resin based honeycomb structure which is waterproof. These panels are made not to crack, warp or fade. The panels are framed with a powder coated aircraft quality aluminum. All of this makes a light weight very durable tonneau cover.

The cover folds up in sections, and in seconds, all the way up to the cab of the pickup truck. This gives you easy access to your truck bed while still having the security and gas saving qualities of a tonneau cover. It sits flat on the truck bed and leaves the stake holes uncovered to allow you to use different types of racks. Great for a ladder rack, canoe rack and more.

There are testimonials of this truck cover saying it is shipped, very well packaged. This is good to ensure that your truck bed cover arrives to your door as it was sent from the warehouse. Many say the cover installs very easily. You can even go to the Bak industries website for an installation video.

Some say that the cover is water tight while others say that some water will get in. It seems that sometimes there is a sealer problem with some applications. When they contacted Bak Industries, Bak sent them some different thicknesses of sealer, which did solve the problem. It seems that the two screws which hold the front of the tonneau cover secure were made of steel and rust would show after a short time. Some changed these to stainless steel or galvanized Overall most people were very satisfied with their purchase. Even the one’s that had slight problems. The look of the Bakflip tonneau cover and the easy installation and how easy it was to get access to their truck bed made them very pleased with their purchase.

It seems the tonneau cover becomes very secure with the addition of a tailgate lock. The way the truck cover latches you need to open the tailgate to open the truck bed cover which is great to keep unwanted people from getting at your cargo.  Get much more information on the Bakflip Tonneau Cover here!

Folding Tonneau Cover

datePosted on 00:00, June 27th, 2008 by Brian Fuller

A pickup truck with a folding tonneau cover brings it a step further than adding a great new look to a truck. The capability of getting at your truck bed very easily within seconds is a feature worth its weight in gold.

Not having to unsnap your tonneau cover or unfasten it with whatever fastening system you may have would be a great asset. Some of the other systems available are; snaps, industrial strength Velcro and some have a special squeeze into the groove type of system, something along the lines of a zip lock freezer bag.

These systems work great and the truck bed covers that have them look awesome on the back of a truck. The problem is that you do have to take the added time and inconvenience to undo these fasteners and then roll up your truck bed cover.

This is where a folding tonneau cover exceeds the rest. Just flip and fold up the lid and there as quick as you can say, truck bed cover that folds, your cargo area is exposed allowing you to put objects in or take objects out.

You do have the tilt lids or covers that lift up from the back very quickly. They also work and look great, but, they do have their set backs. The lid on the tilt covers has to be removed in order to take on taller loads. Again the advantage of owning a folding tonneau cover is all you have to do is fold your cover up and bingity bang your complete truck bed is open for whatever load you want to put on there.

Now you may say, well the retractable tonneau cover has all these advantages that the folding lid has. That is correct but, those retractable truck bed covers come at a high price. They are great if you can afford them. A folding cover gives you the option of getting at your entire cargo area quickly, easily at a very affordable price.

You may say you would like a folding tonneau cover but you really don’t want a soft cover. Don’t fret, there are some hard folding lids as well. Bak makes a sort of plastic folding lid called the Bakflip. If your looking for a tough truck bed cover, you may want to look at the solid fold tonneau cover by Extang.

Extang Tonneau Cover

datePosted on 00:00, June 27th, 2008 by Brian Fuller

Extang Tonneau Cover Manufacturers are a leader in their field of manufacturing soft tonneau covers. They seem to be the manufacturer of the most different model soft truck bed covers on the market today. In my opinion they are still in business because they provide quality products at a reasonable price.

Extang produce everything you could want in a soft cover from roll up’s such as the low profile of their Rt tonneau to snap up’s, velcro sealing tonneaus to a folding truck bed cover as well as a hinged lid.

To briefly describe some of the covers they have to offer I will start with their lowest price truck bed cover to their most expensive model.

The Black Max is one lower price covers on the market today. It comes with a aluminum powder coated black frame and a snap up tarp which is adjustable for all seasons.

The Tuff tonno III is the next in line price wise. This truck cover is a snapless lid that seals together using Extang’s J45 peel and seal system. They use a rotating tail rail that tightens up the tarp. This tarp also uses the spring loaded monster bows.

Next comes the Classic Platinum by Extang. This has an all aluminum frame which installs with clamps that are included. Extang boasts this cover to be made of an all-climate nylon and polymer tarp with stainless steel and brass snaps.

The Extang Saber is next on the list which uses a peel-on design which attaches evenly to the entire frame to ensure the lowest possible fabric stress even during high speeds.

The Extang tool box tonneau is a snap up with a leather grain black vinyl tarp. This tool box cover accepts a tool box between 18 and 21 inches deep. This is a no drill installation with and all aluminum frame and adjustable snaps to keep your tarp snug in different climates.

The RT and the RT Tool box tonneau cover come at the same price. The RT low profile sits nearly flush to your truck bed. This cover rolls up quickly along with the bows to give you quick access to your truck bed. This model has adjustable controls by the cab. It has a Velcro sealing system and secures your cargo with a locking rail. The tool box edition accepts a 20 inch tool box.

The next tonneau cover Extang has to offer is a hinged lid called the Fulltilt. This one comes in both snap and snapless editions. The snapless is a few dollars more. This cover has hinges back by the cab and lifts up from behind on gas shocks. You can lift it up or roll it up or remove it without tools easily. This cover also comes in a tool box edition.

Another model Extang can be quite proud of is their Trifecta which is a folding truck bed cover. The Trifecta folds up in sections from the back towards the cab giving you complete and easy access to your truck bed. This cover comes fully assembled and ready to mount on your truck.

The Express tonneau was designed to be just what the name implies, fast. Customers asked Extang in their reviews for fast and Extang gave them what they wanted. This lid rolls up or closed with integrated bows very quickly. The frame is a strong black anodized aluminum. The strong vinyl tarp seals with industrial strength Velcro.

If you are looking for a soft truck bed cover, whether it is a roll-up, snap or snapless, hinged, folding or a tool box tonneau, Extang Tonneau Cover has you covered.

Truxedo Tonneau Cover Review

datePosted on 00:00, June 27th, 2008 by Brian Fuller

I wrote this Truxedo tonneau cover review, to give you a heads up that this is a company with different products, not just one truck bed cover. These products have different features and I want to make sure that you get the right cover for you and your truck.

They are a leader in the field of these covers and have an assortment of products that are very much in demand. They sell a lot of these covers and with good reason. They built a reputable name for themselves with high quality products.

Let me briefly summarize for you the products they have to offer. I will start off with the product that they started off with, their original Truxedo tonneau. It consist of side rails, bows and headers. The bows and rear header roll up with the tarp for fast easy access to the truck bed area. The tarp has an automatic tension system to keep the tarp snug during different climate changes. The design keeps the cover inside your truck rails so you are able to use your stake holes for accessories such as bed rails or caps and such. The cover latches at the back and becomes even more secure when adding a tailgate lock. It has a Velcro sealing system that does not have to be bonded to the sides. Instead it is secured to a rigid plastic strip that inserts into the side rail frame. This covered has a lifetime guarantee on everything including the fabric.

The Tuxedoplus cover has the same features as the original cover but it comes with a lockable toolbox for tool storage. The toolbox is approximately eleven inches deep and eighteen inches wide and has a gas strut for easy opening. This covered also has a lifetime guarantee on the tonneau including the fabric and one year on the toolbox.

The truxport tonneau is their economically priced cover. This cover goes over the stake holes making them unusable for accessories. It does not have the guaranteed for life floating hook and loop Velcro sealing system. It has a five year warranty instead of the lifetime warranty including the tarp that their other products have. The tension control is manual and not automatic.

The Lo Pro QT is as the name suggests, a low profile cover. If you are looking for a cover that comes completely off and on quickly and easily this cover is for you. With the new quick attach clamps and quick attaching spring loaded header guide, you can get this cover off and on in a hurry. It has the floating Velcro sealing system that slides into the rail system instead of boning it to the truck rails. The stake holes are left open to allow accessories. Automatic tension control to keep the cover nice and tight all the time. Lifetime warranty on everything including the tarp.

The Harley-Davidson tonneau application is everything you see above in the Lo Pro QT except it has the Harley-Davidson bar and shield logo printed on the cover.

Last but not least is the Deuce truck bed cover. This cover has all the benefits of the lo pro with the added feature of a panel that folds up behind the cab to get quick access to toolboxes, fuel cans or other needed gear. The entire cover rolls up quickly as well. Stake holes are exposed for added accessories.

I hope this Truxedo tonneau cover review will narrow picking one of their covers quick and easy without having to click on all different pages. To check out this line of truck bed covers Truxedo Tonneau Cover.

Advantages Of The Undercover Tonneau Cover

datePosted on 00:00, June 27th, 2008 by Brian Fuller

When first hearing about the undercover tonneau cover you may think it belongs in special police or FBI unit. Actually it is a hard hinged truck bed cover made from ABS polymers.  There are advantages of the Undercover Tonneau Cover that make this lid different from other hard truck covers. It comes in black but if you want to match it with your truck color you can paint it. The ABS polymers keeps the weight way lower than the much heavier fibreglass covers. This adds to you saving on fuel. The less weight you have the easier your engine has to work, the less fuel it will burn.

Another advantage this tonneau or any other tonneau is by saving fuel consumption through aerodynamics. Wind glides over the truck bed cover with less resistance rather than hitting your tailgate and causing a strain, especially during higher speeds caused from highway driving.

The cost of this truck bed cover is much lower than fibreglass lids as well. It is very tough because of its special design. It will withstand a tremendous amount of weight and is impact resistant unlike fibreglass covers. As an example, what do you think would happen to the abs plastic when given a light blow of a hammer? Not much, you probably would not even notice it. Now what would you think would happen with a painted fibreglass cover with a blow of the same force? I think you get the picture.

Another advantage of this plastic cover is to protect your cargo from the weather. It is a one piece design so it is going to be one of the best designs for keeping your cargo dry during a hard rain. You will not have to shovel snow out your truck box when you need to use it. Leaves and debris will probably just blow off the top of it rather than collect in your cargo area.

You can install this tonneau easily within a half hour with its fast clamp on installation design. If you need extra height you can remove it within seconds, because of the quick release hardware. Out of all the covers I have reviewed, the undercover tonneau cover has had the least amount of negative remarks said about it. Most covers, no matter how good most customers seem to think they are have some complainers. This is as with most any products. The advantages of the undercover tonneau cover seems to turn the sourest puss into a smiling face.

Solid Fold, Folding Tonneau Cover

datePosted on 00:00, June 23rd, 2008 by Brian Fuller

One of the more recent products, that Extang has in its product line has been out for a little while now and it seems people love the solid fold tonneau cover. A folding tonneau cover that has been taking the truck bed cover industry by storm. It seems to be just what pickup truck owners have been looking for in a tonneau cover. It is a folding cover that that gives you very easy access to your truck bed. That seems to be the key, easy access. This is what truck owners seem to enjoy about a folding cover and Extang came through big time with this addition to their product line.

This lid is constructed from an airplane grade aluminum alloy. The alloy is painted with a black, UV protecting poly-tex finish to keep it looking new for a very long time. The hinge system is designed to keep water out from your cargo area. It is tough, lightweight and great looking with its smooth low profile design.

The cover comes completely assembled. All you need to do is install it. Another great thing about this cover, you do not need any tools to install it. Just clamp it on with the clamps that come with it. For security the cover locks from underneath in the rear. Just add a locking tailgate handle and you have a very secure place to protect your cargo, not only from the weather but from would be thieves as well.

The solid fold tonneau cover is constructed to be strong, to withstand everyday use. Although Extang does not recommend it, they have placed a 4 wheeler on top of the cover and it past the test. Now you must admit, that is tough. If you are looking for a great looking, tough , folding tonneau cover, you should look into this truck bed cover.

For those of you who never owned a bed cover and were wondering if they would serve any purpose other than to give your truck a whole new look. Most customer reviews I have read lead me to the conclusion that they do help out when it comes to conserving gas mileage. They also keep your cargo out of the eyes of would be thieves. Lets face it, you have a much better chance of your cargo still being in your truck box when you come back if nobody can see what is in the cargo area. These covers also protect your cargo from the weather. You do have that advantage with all covers but a folding tonneau offers you very quick, easy access to your cargo area.

My first impression of a cover over your pickup truck bed would be a pain in the butt when it came time to use your cargo area. I have since changed my mind when I seen how easy and quickly you can get to your cargo area, especially with a lid like the solid fold tonneau cover.

Traditional Tonneau Cover Review by Gaylords

datePosted on 00:00, June 23rd, 2008 by Brian Fuller

First let me give a brief description of the Gaylord’s traditional tonneau cover and list some of its features. The Gaylord’s traditional tonneau cover is constructed of fiberglass. You can order them in black or custom painted to match the color of your pickup truck and give it a factory look.

The traditional lid has a stainless steel crossbar and lock system. The two locks are self-tightening compression-type that helps ensure a watertight seal and add security to your cargo area. This tonneau cover by Gaylord’s also comes with two gas struts to help with opening and keeps the lid from slamming closed. The traditional tonneau cover comes with a lifetime warranty for the fiberglass structure and the paint and 2 years on the working parts. I myself think this is a very fair warranty.

The Traditional cover by Gaylord’s also comes available with a speedsturr wing on the back which adds a more sporty and racy look to your pickup truck.

Some previous buyers of this truck bed cover have such comments as how great the truck bed cover looks on their truck and how happy they were with the paint job on the truck lid. I haven’t found very much in the line of negative comments about the traditional tonneau cover by Gaylord’s.

A few points you may want to think about before purchasing this truck bed cover.

The hinged fiberglass tonneau cover would be great if you are looking for great weather and security protection as far as tonneau covers go.

If you use your truck for hunting, fishing, going for groceries or other such uses where you want quick easy access to your truck bed or if you want a very sharp look for your truck, or with the speedsturr wing, a sporty, racy look, the traditional tonneau cover by Gaylords would be a great choice to make.

If you use your truck for larger, high cargo loads, this truck bed lid would not be such a great choice for you. If your loads are usually higher than your truck rails, look for a tonneau cover such as a roll up cover, folding tonneau cover or a retractable truck bed cover.

This truck bed cover comes highly recommended by previous buyers. Overall, as far as quality and looks go, the traditional tonneau cover by Gaylord’s would be a very good purchase for your truck bed.

American Roll Tonneau Cover Review

datePosted on 00:00, June 23rd, 2008 by Brian Fuller

This tonneau cover was designed and built to fit your specific make, model and year pickup truck. Made in the USA by a man “with a working mans PHD”

Truck Covers USA boasts this retractable tonneau cover to have the smallest canister on the market sizing in at 8”x 8”.They say that this truck bed cover has double- walled panels and can support over 500 pounds. That’s a whopping quarter ton plus.

The American roll is tension driven and has stop and lock points at every 12 inches which comes in handy when carrying different loads. It has a textured black powder coat finish which is very tough and durable.

Dirt is kept out of the side rails and canister with the aid of high quality automotive grade wool and brushes. This is where some retractable tonneau covers have a problem.

This is a clamp on tonneau cover with a minimum drilling of holes for the drain tubes of the canister as is for other retractable tonneau covers. They say it can be installed within 2 hours. From what I read it can be any where from a half hour to three and a half hours. Truck covers USA designed and manufactured the clamps themselves especially for this cover. This cover is backed by a 2 year warranty which is a real plus for a retractable tonneau cover. I must say, this is a nice looking tonneau cover.

People who have installed this cover said they have done it quite easily. It only takes a few common tools. You may need some help lifting the canister into place but after that the rest should be a breeze. If you have a bed liner you will probably have to make some cuts in the liner where the clamps need to go and again at the tailgate where the lock of the tonneau cover ends up. No big problem though. If you open and close the cover a lot you may find having to unlock the cover a bit of a pain. This cover locks automatically. It’s great for a fifth wheel. A quite of few people have commented on how strong the cover is.

As is with other retractable tonneau covers you may get slight leakage with a lot of water. I must say that this has to be my favorite manual retractable tonneau cover. Lets just go over some of the good points. It will save you gas – it will deter thieves by keeping things out of sight out of mind not to mention the added locking system which is one of the better locks on tonneau covers today – the American roll will allow you to use your truck bed for tall loads without removing the cover – Easy installation – the cover will stop every twelve inches to accommodate your load – It comes with a 2 year warranty.

Now some of the negative points. May have slight leakage in heavy rain – You need to unlock the cover every time you use it – If you have a bed liner you may have to cut small sections of it for the clamps.

Now you decide if the American Roll tonneau cover is the cover you want for your truck bed and to protect your belongings.

Extang Fulltilt Tonneau Cover Review

datePosted on 00:00, June 23rd, 2008 by Brian Fuller

The Extang Fulltilt tonneau cover has had so many personal good reviews it is hard to top. So many people who had purchased this cover were so pleased, it is hard to believe. They loved the function ability of it. They were ecstatic that it lifts on hinges with the aid of gas shocks. Lots of people loved the ability of being able to roll it up to accommodate a high load. It is also very easy to remove the lid completely if one feels the need. Many were very pleased with the quality of the Fulltilt.

The quality, the price, the look and the gas mileage they gained, to mention a few of the positive things. Just a little heads up but some actually contacted Extang about some problems such as the gap between the cover and the tailgate and the Rep for Extang sent them something to remedy the problem. Those customers were quite happy with the service they received.

Let me give you a brief description of the cover with some of its features. The cover is hinged at the cab and equipped with gas shocks. You can order it with snaps or with “peel & seal” J-Channel tongue and groove closure. The Fulltilt has an aluminum frame with spring-loaded bows. You are able to roll the tarp up or use it on its hinges. This lid also comes available in a toolbox edition.

There were a few problems such as some people had to add extra weather stripping along the cab end or the tailgate end. Most said the instructions were easy to follow but some said throw the instructions away because they are useless. Lots of people said their cargo area stayed dry even through long drives in the rain at highway speeds. Some said their cargo area did receive some water in similar situations. I myself think that you should take the time to make sure you have adequate weather stripping, this could solve this problem.
